Coverage Area

Unlike DSL and other broadband technologies that are limited to only densely populated areas, T1 service is available just about anywhere with a phone line. T1, also known as DS1, uses repeaters to boost up the signal strength of the transmission - allowing it to travel up to 50 miles away from the nearest Central Office location.

DS3 price is determined by market conditions, cost of facilities, and most important, distance from the point of presence (PoP) of the quoting provider. The further a business is from the PoP, the more it costs to extend a DS3 circuit to this business. Another aspect of DS3 price is the “build-out” of proper wiring to and at the served premise. DS3 requires special wiring. Most businesses are not properly wired, or “lit” for DS3. In these cases, installation of appropriate wiring can cost thousands of dollars. If the end user needs less than 12 mbps, bonded DS1 (bonded T1) can be a much less expensive alternative. Since a bonded DS1 circuit only requires two pairs of phone lines, it can be installed free of charge to virtually any business location in the US. If your business premise is wired for DS3 (lit), then full DS3 can provide substantial savings for bandwidths over 12 mbps. If more than 12 mbps is needed but a full DS3 is not, fractional or burstable DS3 are often more cost effective options. However, with any form of DS3, the cost of build-out will be a reality if the building which will be served is not lit. Because the cost of build-out cannot be determined without much assessment by trained technicians, build-out charges are very seldom included with DS3 quotes. Most major providers will not endure the expense of build-out assessment until after the customer commits to a signed application. Commonly, if build-out proves to be too expensive, then the application is terminated without cost to the customer. Regardless of cost of build-out, because price per mbps for full DS3 is commonly less than half than price per mbps of T1, the resulting monthly savings compensates for DS3 build-out costs within a few months.  T1 Data (Internet), an Introduction

Written by: Dennis Green - Jan 8, 2009

A T1 data line is a high speed, 1.54 megabits per second (Mbps), circuit which is comprised of 24 individual DS-O circuits. Each DS-O channel has a speed of 64 kilobits per second (Kbps). For perspective, your home telephone line is likely a DS-O line. T1 data lines are also at times referred to as DS1 circuits. T1 data is carried through two twisted pairs of copper wires. Virtually, all residences and businesses currently have two pairs of copper wires running to them. T1 lines are capable of delivering 1.54 Mbps simultaneously in both directions, one direction for each pair of copper lines. Because T1 data service is repeater driven (signal is digitally reestablished every 6000 feet), it is available several miles from telephone central offices. For this reason, T1 service can be available to virtually all of the businesses in the US. T1 lines are dedicated, in that they are always connected, and are also extremely stable. Most reputable providers include service level agreements which guarantee the reliability of the T1 lines they offer. Although the term T1 is commonly used when referring to a dedicated high bandwidth connection to the internet, T1 circuits can transfer data in many forms to accomplish a variety of functions. These include: fractional t1 (commonly 128 Kbps to 756 Kbps), burstable (less expensive for companies which normally do not need a full DS1/T1), integrated T1 (one T1 line comprised of any combination the types of DS1/T1 listed here), channelized DS1 (one form of integrated T1), point-to-point (direct and constant DS1 connection between to locations), dynamic integrated (a more state-of-the-art alternative to channelized integrated), local (local phone service), PRI, MPLS (multiprotocol label switching), and frame relay. Each of these types of DS1/T1 has advantages over the others, depending on the specific needs of your company. Also, the availability of each is based on the offerings of each T1 provider and the geographic location. As the authorized sales agent for the top 20 T1 providers in the country, we are able to provide real-time availability and comparative price quotes for any address in the country.
